When to Get Your Spray Tan Before Your Big Event
There's one question I get asked more than almost any other in the studio: "when should I come in before my event?" And honestly, I think this is the single biggest thing people get wrong about spray tanning. I have so many clients walk in a full week before a wedding, birthday trip, or big photo shoot, thinking they're being smart and giving the tan plenty of time to settle. I love that they're planning ahead! But a week is usually too early, and I want to explain why.
Your Tan Has a Life Cycle
Every spray tan goes through the same stages. For the first 16 hours or so, the DHA in the solution is still developing on your skin. Over the next day or two, it keeps deepening and evening out. Days 2 through 6 are what I call peak tan. That's when the color is richest, the blend around your hands and feet looks the most natural, and everything just glows. Around day 7 or 8 the fade starts (and it should fade naturally and evenly if you follow post-tan care guidelines). By day 10, most people are ready for a fresh one.
So when you come in a full 7 days before your event, guess what's happening the morning of the big day? You're right in the middle of the fade. You'll still have color, but it's not at its best.
The Sweet Spot: 2 Days Before
If there's one piece of advice I would tattoo on every client, it's this: book your tan 2 days before your event. Here's why that window is magic. By day 2, your real DHA color has fully developed into that natural, sun-kissed finish. You're at the very beginning of your peak window, so the color is going to look incredible in photos.
A lot of brides I see are genuinely surprised by this, because somewhere along the way everyone started treating spray tans like they need a week to settle. They really don't. The solution I use develops in hours, not days.
What About the Day Before?
One day before can absolutely work, but I have to be honest about the tradeoff. Your tan will be gorgeous, but 2 days gives the DHA the time it needs to fully develop.
What About the Morning Of?
Please don't do this to yourself. I know life happens, and sometimes the appointment slot you wanted got taken, and I'm always going to do my best to work you in. But getting a spray tan the same day as your event means you're walking down the aisle, or onto the beach, or into your engagement shoot with unprocessed DHA still developing the color you actually want. If you're in a last-minute pinch, I'd rather you text me and we'll discuss your best options.
Timing by Event Type
Every event has its own little quirks. Here's how I think about each one when a client asks.
- Weddings: 2 days before the ceremony. If you have a rehearsal dinner Friday and the wedding Saturday, aim for Thursday. For a full wedding-day rundown, check out my blog post on this.
- Bachelorette or birthday weekends: 1 day before day 1 of the trip, so your peak falls perfectly within the trip.
- Vacations and cruises: 1 day before you fly out. Just know that pool chlorine and salt water speed up the fade, so pack the Face Mist.
- Photo shoots and engagement sessions: Exactly 2 days before. This is the window where skin photographs best in both natural light and flash.
- Proms, galas, and concerts: 2 days before works beautifully. Same logic as everything else.
- Just because: Whenever! No rules here. Come in the day you want to feel your best and enjoy the glow all week.
Timing With Your Other Beauty Appointments
One more rule of thumb. Your spray tan should always be the last appointment on your prep list. Anything that exfoliates, strips, or irritates the skin will fight with the solution, so give those a head start.
- Manicures and pedicures: the day before your tan is totally fine.
- Waxing, threading, and facials: at least 2 days before, so your skin has time to settle before the solution goes on.
- Your spray tan goes last, right before your event.
What If You Already Booked Too Early?
First of all, it happens! This is not a reason to panic. The Sunday Tan makes it really easy to reschdule. Just note that if you reschedule within 48 hours of your appointment, the deposit is kept. If rescheudling is not an option, a few fixes can work.
- Moisturize daily with lotion. Dry skin fades fast and unevenly, and hydration is the single biggest factor in how well a tan holds.
- Use the Sunday Tan Face Mist every morning and evening to keep your face glowing, since that area tends to fade first.
- Avoid long hot showers, chlorine, and exfoliating scrubs in the lead-up to your event.
- If it's a ~week too early, you can use the Sunday Tan tan remover to scrub off the first tan, and we can redo it with proper timing.
If you're ever unsure about timing, just text me when you book. I would so much rather spend 2 minutes helping you pick the right day than have you show up for a tan that won't be at its best when you need it. Timing really is half the magic.
The Short Version
If you remember nothing else from this post, remember 2 days. That's the number. 2 days before your event, come in for your tan, and wake up on your big day glowing exactly the way you hoped you would. A little timing goes a long way, and I'm always here to help you get it right.
