Why I Started Sunday Tan
People ask me all the time how Sunday Tan got started, and the honest answer is that it began long before it ever had a name. It started with a boy I met in high school, a couple of cross-country moves, and a skill I picked up almost by accident and then completely fell in love with. So if you've ever wondered how a spray tan studio ended up running out of my home here in San Antonio, here's the whole story.
It Started in Arizona
Back in 2013, I left Alaska and moved all the way down to Arizona to be with the guy I'd eventually marry while he finished his undergrad at the University of Arizona. I was young, a long way from home, and still figuring out what I wanted to do with myself. That's when I found spray tanning.
I didn't know it at the time, but I'd just stumbled onto the thing I'd still be doing more than a decade later. Something about it just clicked. I loved watching someone catch their reflection and stand a little taller, the way a good glow could change how a person carried herself. I was hooked on getting to be the reason someone felt that confident.
Then Came Kansas (and a Lot of Twins)
When my husband started graduate school, we moved to Kansas, and we ended up spending five years there. For a big chunk of that time, I nannied a set of twins. I adored those kids, and I had no idea I was quietly in training for my own twins a few years down the road (more on that in a minute).
Toward the end of our time in Kansas, I picked spray tanning back up, and honestly, it felt like coming home to something. I'd missed it more than I realized. Getting back into it reminded me that this wasn't just something I happened to be good at, it was something I genuinely loved.
San Antonio, and the Year Sunday Tan Was Born
In 2019, my husband's job brought us to San Antonio, and the move came with a big question: what was next for me? The two of us talked it through a lot. I wanted something that was mine, something I was good at and truly loved. But just as much, I wanted to be present at home and not miss the little everyday moments. Spray tanning was the answer to both.
So that same year we arrived, Sunday Tan was born. I built it around my life instead of squeezing my life around a job. I run it right out of our home, on a schedule that lets me be here for my family while still doing work that lights me up. It's the best of both worlds, and I don't take that for granted for a single second.
And Then We Had Our Own Twins
In 2020, we welcomed our twins. (See? All that nannying really was good practice.) Having them is exactly why building Sunday Tan the way I did means so much to me. I get to be home for the chaos and the cuddles and all the ordinary in-between moments, and still pour into something I love and into the women who come into my studio.
Why It Will Always Feel Personal
When you book with me, you're not walking into a chain or a sterile salon. You're coming into my home, and you're part of the reason I get to do work I love without giving up time with my kids. That's not lost on me. Every person who trusts me with their glow, whether it's for a wedding, a vacation, or just a regular Tuesday, is part of this little life we've built.
That's why Sunday Tan will always feel personal, because it truly is. It's my story, my home, my family, and my favorite thing to do, all rolled into one. Thank you for being part of it. And if we haven't met yet, I'd love for you to come see what it's all about.
